Job Summary:

n

A Surgical Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (SICU RN) provides specialized care to patients who have undergone major surgical procedures or who are experiencing life-threatening complications from surgical conditions. The SICU RN manages complex post-surgical patients, focusing on monitoring, assessment, and care related to critical post-operative issues such as cardiovascular instability, respiratory failure, sepsis, and other post-surgical complications.

Key Responsibilities:

n

    n

  • Assess, plan, and deliver critical care to post-surgical patients, managing complex surgical complications and life-threatening conditions.
  • n

  • Monitor and evaluate patients’ vital signs, hemodynamic status, respiratory function, and response to surgical interventions.
  • n

  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and other treatments related to post-operative care, including pain management, sedation, and antibiotics.
  • n

  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare providers to develop and adjust care plans based on patients’ evolving needs.
  • n

  • Manage mechanical ventilation, central lines, arterial lines, and other life-support devices as needed.
  • n

  • Recognize and respond to complications such as respiratory failure, sepsis, bleeding, and cardiovascular instability.
  • n

  • Educate patients and families on post-surgical care, wound care, pain management, and prevention of complications.
  • n

  • Provide emotional and psychological support to patients and their families, particularly in managing post-operative stress and anxiety.
  • n

  • Maintain accurate, detailed documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes in accordance with hospital policies.
  • n

  • Assist in the preparation and management of patients undergoing high-risk surgical procedures, including trauma, cardiac, or neuro surgeries.
  • n

  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, ensuring effective communication and care coordination with the surgical team.
  • n

Qualifications:

n

    n

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
  • n

  • Licensure:n
      n

    • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
    • n

    n

  • n

  • Certification:n
      n

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • n

    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
    • n

    • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification preferred
    • n
