The PCT works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician and adheres to strict safety and infection control protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up, test, and operate hemodialysis machines and water treatment systems in accordance with prescribed protocols.
  • Prepare patients for dialysis treatments by measuring and recording vital signs, weight, and other pre-treatment data.
  • Cannulate patient access sites (fistulas, grafts, or catheters) following established procedures.
  • Monitor patients during dialysis sessions for signs of discomfort, complications, or adverse reactions, and report concerns to the RN or physician.
  • Perform post-treatment tasks, including removing needles, dressing access sites, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Educate patients on dialysis care, proper nutrition, fluid restrictions, and self-care techniques.
  • Maintain accurate records of treatment details, including machine settings, patient responses, and any interventions.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control standards, including cleaning and disinfecting machines and workspaces.
  • Stock and maintain an organized inventory of supplies needed for dialysis procedures.
  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients coping with chronic illness and treatment regimens.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a dialysis technician training program is preferred.
  • Certification: Certification as a Dialysis Technician (e.g., CCHT or BONENT certification) is required in most states.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a healthcare setting or dialysis center is preferred, though on-the-job training may be provided for entry-level candidates.
